Electric discharge machining (EDM), or spark erosion is originally a high-precision manufacturing process. It is widely used, for example, for the production of forging or stamping tools made out of extremely hard metal. Physically, it is a spark process in a dielectric liquid and not an arc process. Sparks occur if an electric field in the gap between the electrode and the workpiece breaks the strength of the dielectric medium; this is associated with a removal of material.
If a spark is detected (by measuring the electric current), the voltage is switched off so that the dielectric fluid can regenerate and the development of the spark to an arc can be avoided. After the collapse of a spark, the process can restart. Cutting speed is very low. The process is strongly dependent on the quality of the dielectric fluid and on precise control of the gap between the electrode and the work piece.
